Mass spectrometry imaging of human dilated cardiomyopathy, an intractable disease, was performed using tapping-mode scanning probe electrospray ionization. Lipids localized in fibrotic regions and widely distributed in the myocardium were visualized. Furthermore, we found that the ion signal intensity of a specific group of lipids related to mitochondrial function was markedly reduced in normal perifibrotic cardiomyocytes.
