Data centers currently support a variety of infrastructures, but there are two limiting factors. The first is the need to store and operate large amounts of data in a limited installation area, and the second is the need to reduce power consumption as an operational cost. To solve these problems, there is a need for large-capacity HDDs, but the existing PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) method has a limit on how much higher the capacity can be, so it has become necessary to introduce new technology to increase capacity. Seagate Technology has now commercialized a large-capacity HDD that incorporates HAMR (heat assisted magnetic recording), contributing to solving the two major limiting factors currently facing data centers.
