The various functions exhibited by materials are closely linked to the symmetry of the electronic degrees of freedom inherent in them. In this talk, I will focus on novel spintronics based on artificial manipulation of the symmetry of materials. Specifically, I will introduce our recent work on “Meta opto-spintronics”, which involves optical control of spin currents using metamaterials with artificially manipulated nanoscale symmetries.
