The success rate of electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope (EC-STM) tip fabrication was greatly improved by a novel method of electrodepositing gold on a carbon microelectrode. EC-STM measurements and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) of terphenylthiol self-assembled monolayers on Au(111) were performed using this tip. Changes of the shape of the tip end depending on the electrodeposition conditions and its application to TERS in electrochemical environment are also discussed.
