Clathrates

Clathrate materials have been attractive due to their rich properties and potential for the device application in thermoelectric and semiconductor products. The crystal structures are formed by atomic cages based on group IV elements such as Si and Ge. Each cage can accommodate guest metallic atom (M), such as alkali or alkaline earth elements which act as the donor. Therefore, the properties of clathrates depend on the guest atoms and the dopants. Especially, type II clathrate MxIV136 (0 < x < 24) and type I clathrate M8IV46 are well-know because of their properties among the clathrates. In this paper, we report films of Na-Cu-Ge ternary clathrates in which Cu atoms are partially substituted for Ge, prepared by using our unique technique.
