Although Japan is active in radiation measurement research, approximately 90% of PET systems in Japan rely on imports, and Japan lags behind the rest of the world in nuclear medicine applications. There is a strong need for new technologies to solve clinical problems, and applied physics has a large role to play. Therefore, we launched the Future PET Creative Research Unit with the support of the Nakatani Foundation, with the aim of conducting applied physics research that leads to clinical practice, which we defined as Bench-to-Clinical (B2C) research.
