Interferometry
When a femtosecond laser beam is focused on a sample, sound waves are generated through multiphoton absorption, carrier generation, and electron-lattice interactions. The generated sound waves propagate through air, through objects, and on surfaces. Sound waves propagating in air, on the surface of an object, and through the air generate minute displacements at certain arrival points. The sound wave is measured by irradiating another laser beam for vibration reception at the arrival point, causing interference between the object light and the reference light, and obtaining the optical intensity.
