When a sample is irradiated with mid-infrared light pulses, the heat pulses generated by the light absorption generate acoustic waves in the air adjacent to the sample. Unlike the conventional ATR method, which is limited by the seepage depth of the evanescent field, the photoacoustic method is useful for noninvasively analyzing deeper biological tissue components because the maximum depth of measurement is determined by the optical penetration length. In this study, we report an attempt to reveal information on the skin depth by utilizing the dependence of the measurement depth on the modulation frequency in the photoacoustic method.
