We found that tetragonal-lattice periodic surface structures were formed by irradiation with circularly-polarized femtosecond laser pulses on the surface of a SUS304 substrate in a narrow region. The period was approximately 0.95 μm, slightly shorter than the wavelength of the laser used (1.03 μm). We speculate that the formation of this peculiar structure is related to unidirectional scratches that existed on the surface of the substrate before laser irradiation.
