Stroke is a serious disease requiring time-sensitive diagnosis and treatment. With the goal of rapidly diagnosing the disease from peripheral blood before the patient arrives at the hospital, we measured the infrared absorption spectra of plasma donated by 163 patients and 53 healthy subjects. This measurement does not require specific reagents or sample preparation. We report the presence or absence of stroke based on multivariate analysis of the spectra, discrimination of infarction/hemorrhage status between patients, and early identification of transient ischemic attack (TIA), a precursor symptom of cerebral infarction.
