It is anticipated that reinforcement learning will prove an effective method for autonomous optimization of lasers in the development of lasers with extreme performance characteristics. However, the application of reinforcement learning to solid-state oscillators requiring spatial mode control has not yet been realized. In this presentation, we will report the results of an attempt to control spatial modes using the Q-learning algorithm in a cavity with a spatial light modulator for the purpose of output power maximization as a first step.
