Fumaronitrile based π-conjugated molecules exhibit aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) characteristics. However, their photoluminescence quantum efficiency (ΦPL) is low. In the photonic applications based on lasing, dimensions of gain media determine the functionalities. Thus, realization of high ΦPL and controlling the dimensions are necessary. In this work, bis(biphenyl)fumaronitrile which exhibit superior AIEE characteristics were grown in two-dimensional platelet crystals, one-dimensional needle crystals, and microdot structures by various self-assembly process, resulted in lasing under optical pumping.
