We have elucidated the mechanism behind the exceptional ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties exhibited by ceramics in the BT-BF system, despite their apparent cubic crystal structure. While both Bi ions and Ba ions occupy the corner sites of the perovskite-type unit cell, only Bi ions exhibit off-centering along the crystal axes with nearly equal probability. Upon applying an electric field, we discovered that the lattice strain occurs as a result of the displacement of Bi ions in the direction of the applied electric field, and this finding is closely related to the excellent ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties.
