Near-infrared spectroscopy is a typical non-staining and non-invasive analytical method, and has high potential for biological analyses. However, its practical applications to cells have been limited. In particular, there are no reported instances of observing near-infrared absorption in adherent cells. This is because the absorption from adherent cells is buried in the dominant water absorption, which is the main component of the culture medium. In this study, we verified the utility of near-infrared spectroscopy in basic research on adherent human cultured cells by preparing a high-density cell suspension.
