Phase-change materials are used in DVDs and Blu-ray Discs for information recording using the difference in optical properties between the crystalline and amorphous phases. Recently, phase-change materials based on the crystal-crystal phase transition have been developed, in which the energy consumption is smaller and the phase-change speed is faster than that of conventional phase-change materials. In this presentation, we describe the ultrafast optical response and the mechanism of non-thermal ultrafast phase transition of MnTe thin films investigated by using femtosecond lasers.
