Giant vesicles (GUVs) are spherical lipid bilayers, the basic structure of human cell membranes, and are often used as reaction sites for biomembrane mimicry. The bilayer separates the inside and outside of the cell, and the difference in ion concentrations generated there is an important factor in the expression of biological functions. In this study, we focused on protons, which are considered to have a relatively large membrane permeability coefficient, and attempted to evaluate the proton permeability of GUVs and the membrane potential generated in lipid bilayers.
