A new terahertz (THz) wave generation method using nonlinear optical process is reported. Nonlinear polarization is induced by applying a femtosecond laser pulse to a nonlinear crystal. We focus on longitudinal components of the nonlinear polarization which is usually ignored. When a circular polarized pulse is incident on a ZnTe crystal, the longitudinal polarization is maximized in the [111] direction. The magnitude is comparable to that of transverse polarization in the case of linearly polarized pulse excitation. This suggests that, by injecting a circular polarized pulse into an edge of a (111)-cut ZnTe crystal, THz wave can be extracted from the edge.
