Valley photonic crystal (VPC) waveguides enable robust propagation of light even in the presence of certain structural defects or sharp bends, making them promising for applications such as miniaturization of photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Our group has proposed and realized a topological slow-light waveguide using VPC (VPC-TSLW) and realized an optical coupler with high-coupling efficiency between a wire waveguide and a VPC-TSLW, which is essential for applications to PICs. Here, we report the design of an optical coupler through the covariance matrix adaptation evolution strategy for further improvement of this coupling efficiency.
