Gold nanoparticles modified with carboxylic acid-terminated alkanethiols having different numbers (n) of -(CH2)- units in the alkyl chain, we have controlled the dispersion and aggregation of gold nanoparticles in liquids to prepare suspensions with uniform particle amounts and controlled interparticle gap distances. By comparing the LSPR spectra and Raman spectra of dimers with different monovalent cations (H, Li, Na, and K) with the spectral analysis by the finite element method, we discuss the binding mode of dimerization by monovalent cations.
