In these 40 years, the research on self-assembled monolayer, SAM, formed through self-organization of organic molecules on a substrate surface has been grown up due to fundamental interests and its application. Here we report on the history of the SAM research and several our reserach results on SAM and its multilayering, that is, the formation of self-assembled multilayer. In addition, surface analytic techniques important for SAM are demonstrated.
