We have been studying conversion technologies of biomass to energy and chemicals, and have focused on solution plasma as a candidate process. In this study, we investigated the degradation behavior of phenol (H nucleus), guaiacol (G nucleus), and syringol (S nucleus) as models of lignin aromatic nuclei in solution plasma. As a result, it was found that OH radicals are first added to the o- and p-positions of the aromatic nucleus, followed by oxidative ring opening to form various organic acids.
