In recent years, highly durable and flexible devices are becoming an active research topic. The devices utilizing polymer substrates are often subjected to cyclic bending, leading to surface cracks in substrate and degradation of their device performance. Understanding the degradation mechanism of polymer films is key to developing durable devices. However, the bending fatigue behavior of polymer films remains unclear due to the lack of molecular scale analysis. In this study, we investigated the luminescence behavior of anthracene-based luminescent probe derivatives covalently bonded to the polymer coatings over polymer substrates, allowing us to evaluate the molecular scale bending deformation due to the luminescent changes associated with bond cleavage of anthracene dimers.
