Ilmenite-type vanadium oxides undergo V-V dimerization below 500 K. The formation of molecular orbitals between adjacent vanadium ions leads to the V-V dimerization, which induces a structural transition and a metal-insulator transition. We will present details of the V-V dimerization in ilmenite-type vanadium oxides and the application of this phenomenon to the new functions.
