A ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic heterostructure with an antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) between the two ferromagnetic layers is called a synthetic antiferromagnet. Recently, we have demonstrated electric field modulation of the IEC in epitaxial [Co/Ru/Co]SAF/Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3(011) (PMN-PT) artificial multiferroic structures. In order to elucidate the origin of the electric field modulation, we report here a detailed study of the electric field effect on the IEC of multiferroic structures with different IEC strengths.
