[25p-1BL-2]CosmicNet: A Citizen Science Desktop Muon Detector
〇Axani N Spencer
Keywords:
Cosmic rays,Muons,Particle physics
A rich amount of physics can be explored using natures naturally occurring abundant flux of cosmic ray muons. New technologies have opened the door to low cost, self contained particle detectors, which can be now built at the high school level. The CosmicWatch Desktop Muon Detector is a University of Delaware based physics outreach program that aims to promote education and exploration for a broad audience, while also incorporating various aspects of electronics-shop and machine-shop technical development. This talk will focus on the technical aspects of particle detection principles and the detectors themselves, as well as how they can be used to explore astrophysics, particle physics, and nuclear physics. This technology is being used to develop a new citizen science project, called CosmicNet, which aims to connect individuals together to make a world-wide web of cosmic ray muon detectors.
