The mechanism of lightning is a mystery and may be triggered by the interaction between the strong electric field and cosmic-ray air showers. The “Thundercloud Project” is a new attempt to elucidate the mysteries of lightning and thunderclouds using Citizen Science. With the cooperation of citizen supporters, many gamma-ray monitors, Cogamo, are installed near Kanazawa during winter seasons to develop a large-scale thunderstorm and lightning observation network. We aim to realize open science in collaboration with the public and contribute to the cutting-edge research in the physics field.
