Beamline for Schools (BL4S) is a physics competition organized by CERN and DESY inviting teams of high-school students to propose an experiment to be performed at a particle accelerator. The students can propose an experiment using the beams as well as the detectors, electronics, and software available for BL4S at CERN and DESY.
The first edition of BL4S took place at CERN in 2014 and the competition has become an annual event ever since. In 2019 DESY joined BL4S as an organizer. The competition is becoming increasingly popular and has attracted more than 2500 students in its most recent edition.
The competition will be introduced, and some exemplary winning experiments of past editions will be presented to illustrate the variety and complexity of the experiments that are possible.
