In the crack propagation in viscoelastic solids such as rubber, gels, and resins, a phenomenon known as a velocity jump is observed, in which the crack velocity abruptly increases by several orders of magnitude from slow to fast propagation. Accompanying this transition, the crack tip profile changes from a parabolic form to a sharper form. However, the mechanisms underlying both the velocity jump and crack tip sharpening have remained unclear. This presentation highlights recent research that elucidates these mechanisms through a combination of experiments, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulations. Previous findings on velocity jumps will also be introduced, together with guiding principles for enhancing the toughness of soft materials.
