We investigated the functionalities of GaAs and multinary (Al,Ga,In)(N,As,Sb,Bi) compound semiconductor nanowires grown on silicon wafers by molecular beam epitaxy. Diverse functionalities are demonstrated, including laser emission in the visible and fiber-optic communication bands, 98% visible-light absorption across a 2-inch wafer, formation of cylindrical and unique quantum structures, and nonlinear optical effects.
