The inactivation of radiation-resistant bacteria Deinococcus Radiodurans (DR) by oxygen or water plasma was investigated for the purpose of non-pharmaceutical sterilization of space probes. The dried DR in a monolayer was irradiated with oxygen plasma (40 W, 40 Pa) for a maximum of 4 hours, resulting in a survival rate of less than 5% in 1 hour and complete inactivation in 3 hours.Microscopic observation showed destruction and deformation of cell walls, and structural damage by reactive oxygen species was considered to be the main inactivation factor.Similar results were obtained with water plasma, suggesting the effectiveness of plasma sterilization.
