The hole drilling characteristics of PTFE and PC films were investigated using a short-pulse CO2 laser in combination with a novel water assist technique. Conventional water assist methods function primarily to cool the sample and reduce thermal effects. In contrast, the proposed method utilizes the absorption of CO2 laser light by water to suppress the expansion of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) caused by subsequent pulses. In this study, the effectiveness of the novel water assist in reducing the HAZ during short-pulse CO2 laser processing of polymer films was demonstrated, and the processing characteristics were evaluated.
