Recently, research focusing on the creation of dynamic optical devices, such as wavefront-controlled beam steering devices and variable focus lenses, by forming and utilizing refractive index gradients within liquid crystal (LC) devices, has attracted considerable interest. Realizing these devices requires the formation of a tilt angle alignment pattern within thick LC devices. However, conventional methods utilizing the alignment force from the substrate interface are unsuitable for application to such thick devices as the alignment force diminishes with increasing thickness. In this study, we propose a novel method to realize pre-tilt angle patterning by embedding an alignment-patterned polymer structure within an LC cell.
