We evaluated the electronic-structure dependence of etching reactions—used as a means for sorting carbon nanotubes—both at the single-tube and ensemble levels under catalytic conditions. In contrast to non-catalytic reactions, etching in water vapor and methanol environments showed no significant selectivity between metallic and semiconducting nanotubes, underscoring the importance of distinguishing catalytic and non-catalytic pathways.
