Each spatial mode of a multimode fiber has a unique effective refractive index and different group velocity. Using this characteristic, we have proposed a method called temporal spatial mode selection, which utilizes active mode-locking in multimode fiber lasers to selectively excite an arbitrary spatial mode. If achieving the freely selective excitation of spatial modes in lasers and fiber lasers, there will be many potential applications in high-power ultrafast-pulse lasers, laser processing, telecommunications, and so on.
