From April 2018 to September 2024, I served as President of Tokyo Institute of Technology, promoting the principles of “Appreciating Diversity,” “Collaborative Challenge,” and “Decisive Action.” Building on the reforms initiated by my predecessor, President Yoshinao Mishima, I focused on enhancing research capabilities and advancing diversity, especially gender balance. Notable initiatives included female-only faculty recruitment and the introduction of a special admission quota for female undergraduate students. These measures aimed to address gender disparities in science and engineering and foster a more inclusive academic environment. In this talk, I will present the background, implementation, and outcomes of these efforts, and discuss future directions for diversity-driven transformation in higher education.
