Improvement of the upward directionality of grating coupler (GC) radiation by adding a phase adjusting layer and a reflective layer on top of the grating coupler is investigated. When guided wave is diffracted by the GC, a part of the upward diffraction wave is reflected by the reflective layer and interferes with the downward diffraction wave. If the thickness of the phase adjusting layer is determined so that they are in opposite phase, they cancel each other out and the upward directionality is improved. By comparing it with and without reflection layer, improvement in directionality experimentally demonstrated by the reflective layer cladding.
