We review recent progress in membrane modulators and lasers. The membrane strcure allows for high optical confinement and low junction capacitance, enabling the development of high-efficiency and high-speed optical modulators. Additionally, because the effective refractive indices of the membrane InP layer and the Si layer are similar, optical coupling between the InP and Si layers is facilitated, allowing for the integration of high-performance InP-based lasers and optical modulators on Si-waveguide circuits.
