The fabrication of AuNP dimers that uniformly maintain optical properties requires careful control. The dimerization mechanism remains unclear, and further studies are needed to elucidate the control of nanostructures at the Au interface. AuNPs modified with carboxylic acid-terminated alkanethiols with alkyl chain unit numbers (n = 2 to 5) are aggregated to form dimers with minimized interparticle distances by replacing the solvent environment. LSPR and SERS spectroscopy are used to discuss the effects of the odd/even number of alkyl chains and the solvent environment on the sub-1 nm gap interface.
