Advances in semiconductor fabrication technology made it possible to fabricate two-dimensional semiconductor microlasers with various cavity shapes. The polygonal approximation of the cavity shape is one of the effective methods to decrease fabrication cost of the microlasers. In this work, I investigated the effect of the polygonal approximation for a circular microcavity on the whispering gallery modes using the finite element method.
