In plasma-assisted catalytic synthesis of ammonia, atomic nitrogen and vibrational excited molecular nitrogen were identified as active nitrogen species contributing to nitrogen adsorption on the catalyst surface. In this contribution, we compared their contributions. In low-pressure plasma, atomic nitrogen was found to be the primary contributor, while in atmospheric-pressure plasma with a high vibrational temperature, the contribution of vibrational excited states was observed. Even in low-gas-pressure plasma, the contribution of vibrational excited states was suggested, if the vibrational temperature of molecular nitrogen was extremely high.
