Droplet robots generated by localized laser heating emerge through a process of circulatory metabolism, in which the dissipation of liquid components (via evaporation and diffusion) is balanced by inflow driven by Marangoni convection. We refer to this self-sustaining, dynamic structure as a "Metaboloid." In this presentation, we discuss the Metaboloid as a valuable experimental model for exploring the physical basis of life-like phenomena, such as the emergence of order from disorder, as well as for considering new directions in metabolism-inspired robotics.
