Second harmonic generation (SHG) behavior of NLO polymer/Si nanoparticles hybrid structure is reported. Si is an optical medium with inversion symmetry, so in principle it does not exhibit second-order nonlinear optical effects. In this work, we addressed this limitation by growing polymer materials with high nonlinear optical susceptibility (NLO polymer) on the surface of Si nanoparticles. The benefits of this approach were demonstrated by comparing the results with those of Si nanoparticles without NLO polymer. While Si nanoparticles without NLO polymer exhibited only weak SHG signals due to surface-induced nonlinearity, the hybrid structure with NLO polymer produced SHG signals with intensity up to 3,000 times higher.
