Conventional thermoelectric devices cannot operate in an environment with uniform thermal radiation. Therefore, they are unable to recover and reuse waste heat that exists in such environments. In contrast, we proposed and demonstrated metamaterial thermoelectric conversion that creates electricity even under uniform thermal radiation. Furthermore, we found that this technology enables the cooling of a space surrounded by opaque absorbers. We named this process nonradiative cooling.
