A low-iridium catalyst, Ir-MnO2, using manganese dioxide has been developed by RIKEN for use in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. Tosoh Corporation is working on its industrialization. In Ir-MnO2, using MnO2 as a support forms highly active hexavalent iridium. Additionally, it has been confirmed that MnO2 suppresses the dissolution of Ir. This makes it a catalyst expected to exhibit high activity and durability.
