We have developed a computational method for optimizing photonic crystal (PC) resonators for surface-emitting quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) that offers computational accuracy comparable to the finite element method, yet is three orders of magnitude faster. Using this method, we were able to calculate the dispersion relation, absorption loss, diffraction loss, and interference from light reflected from the back electrode of the PC resonator. Since the key computational results are derived semi-analytically, the structural optimization of PC resonators can be carried out with a high degree of predictability.
