We observed the bowl-shaped organic molecule trioxosumanene (TOSUM) on metal substrates under ultrahigh vacuum and low-temperature conditions using scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. When the tip was brought close to the TOSUM on Au(111), a structural change in the individual molecule occurred. As no current was detected during the tip approach, this reaction is considered to be driven by the localized force exerted by the tip. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy and chemical structure imaging revealed that the product is TOSUM with an altered adsorption orientation.
