To clarify the mechanism of afterglow reduction by Mg2+ co-doping in Ce-doped YAGG, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-excitation, emission luminescence and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) measurements were performed. Mg2+ co-doping significantly suppressed the 700–900 nm emission associated with Cr3+- and Fe3+-related defects, as well as the TSL peak attributed to oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, a remarkable decrease in afterglow intensity was observed. These results suggest that Mg2+ co-doping suppresses electron trapping at impurity-related defects and oxygen vacancies, thereby effectively reducing the afterglow component.
