In a system where high-Q photonic crystal nanocavities are coupled via a waveguide, optical functions such as optical buffer memories and optical isolators can be realized by dynamically modulating the refractive index. To date, aiming for optical buffer memory applications, we have used structures with an in-plane Q factor of 19,000 and a radiation Q factor of approximately 41 million. However, optical isolators require a low in-plane Q factor and a radiation Q factor that is high relative to the in-plane Q factor to achieve broadband operation and loss suppression. In this study, we report on our search for such structures.
