international collaborative research program
We promote long-term research among high school students using SNS for continuous discussions, with teams comprising our school, an overseas school, and one to two domestic schools. These initiatives include one-week mutual visits featuring face-to-face research, field trips, and cultural exchanges. As a positive effect, 51 students—including 21 from our school and 30 from domestic partners—joined programs with four countries, successfully proving our role as a national hub for international research. Through this process, students faced genuine academic challenges and scientific value conflicts, overcoming language barriers with sheer enthusiasm. Although some showed slight decreases in English confidence, this reflects a deepened meta-cognition and accurate self-assessment from collaborating with top overseas students rather than a decline in actual skill. However, several structural challenges emerged; while groups completed their presentations, they failed to finish full co-authored papers due to time limits, academic writing gaps, and a lack of online co-writing management. Additionally, regarding pre-guidance, students struggled with research design by incorporating too many variables, and with assertion by yielding to peer pressure over poor protocols, highlighting that enhanced pre-guidance is essential to overcome these unique collaborative challenges.
