There are two types of passive smoking: secondhand and thirdhand smokes. Thirdhand smoke (THS) includes tobacco smoke-derived pollutants that are released from walls or clothes exposed to secondhand smoke once. We have studied a rapid and simple detection of THS using the microbeads dielectrophoresis-based DNA detection method. In this study, secondhand smoke from research cigarettes was adsorbed onto filters, and the adsorbates extracted into water were then detected. The results showed a correlation between the number of cigarettes burned and the measured response.
